Some modern acoustic pianos (the ones where wood and felt hammers strike the strings) can be played as regular pianos one minute, and convert to player pianos the next. These options start at $5,000 and allow you the advantage of the piano playing itself when you feel like being entertained. (Arthur Rubinstein will actually be playing your piano in your living room). There are presently three companies manufacturing these player mechanisms. They are PianoDisc, Pianomation and Disklavier. You may want to explore those options.

At present, the most technologically sophisticated instrument on the market is Yamaha's Disklavier Pro 2000.
